In The Honeymoon Spotlight: Melbourne
If your idea of the perfect honeymoon includes efficient transport and espresso on tap, a post-wedding getaway set against a bustling cityscape has probably been top of your mind. This week, for those city slickers among us, we put our spotlight on Melbourne – close by, chic and endlessly diverse, this is the ultimate in metropolitan getaways.
Why we love it
A quick four-hour flight from Auckland, Melbourne is a cosmopolitan city rich in culture, cuisine and all things cool. The trendy bars, cafés and restaurants that line the streets and laneways are easily accessible via one of the historic trams, and the shopping is, well, to die for.
Head to Chapel Street, where flagship retail stores, hot new designers and vintage treasure troves await, or, if you’re a serious shopaholic, book a dedicated shopping tour of the city (melbourneshoppingtours.com.au).
But it’s not just big spenders who are in for a treat. Foodies will fall in love with the gastronomic splendor of multicultural Melbourne. Carlton’s legendary Lygon Street is home to a collection of authentic Italian restaurants, and between 28 February and 16 March, the city bursts to life with The Melbourne Wine and Food Festival (melbournefoodandwine.com.au).
If you’re a tennis fan, plan your trip around the Australian Open in January so you can catch your favourite players in action. Or, for a more leisurely change of pace, head to the nearby Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula for a tour of the region’s exquisite boutique wineries.
Where to stay
Crown Towers is centrally located on the banks of the Yarra River and has stunning views of the city and Port Phillip Bay. Its 481 guestrooms feature opulent marble bathrooms, immaculate furnishings and state-of-the-art technology such as a plasma screen TV with laptop, DVD or MP3 player input, iPod docking station and a video-on-demand entertainment system.
